DEXTER LEWIS HORTON, SR., affectionately known as "Deck" and "Dixie", was the son of the late Queen Esther Neal Horton and William Askew Horton, Sr. Dexter was born on February 4, 1950 in Franklin County, NC. He was the third of five children and the baby boy. He was married to Robin Jones and they had one son. Dexter gained his wings and entered his eternal rest on October 14, 2024.
Deck received his education in the Baltimore City Public School System. He graduated from Fairmount Hill Vocational High School in 1968. He joined the Army in 1969 and received his military training in Fort Dix, NJ. Thereafter, he was stationed at Fort Polk, LA. In 1986, Dexter received an honorable discharge from the Army. He took up trade school for welding at All State Career. Throughout the years, he worked construction with several companies.
Dixie was a good cook! He would make T bone steaks with onions, Hamburger Helper, and fried potatoes, which was his specialty. He loved a good mushroom cheesesteak from Mama Mia's and a box of shrimp yakamein. He also loved him a good old cup of coffee, no matter the time of day.
Deck loved watching wrestling and would take his great nieces and nephews to shows at the Arena. No matter where he lived, he always had his nieces and nephews around him. He made his home comfortable for them to come over on weekends. He always had a special bond with his nieces and nephews. One thing he didn't play about was his robes and he could wear them all day. When one got raggedy, he changed into another one. He loved to crack jokes and make everyone laugh. He loved to talk sports with his brothers. Deck loved to gossip and fuss with his sisters. He was very close with his youngest sister, Gloria. He definitely was glued to his mother's hip and loved her cooking. Deck was a true momma's boy.
Funny, crazy, outgoing Dixie was full of life! Anytime you came across him, you would have a good time. He loved music and switching some song lyrics, making them into his own. His favorite song was "Crank That" by Soulja Boy. Dickie was a memorable person you could never forget!
