In Loving Memory of Devera Elaine Zainal

(August 13, 1943 - March 20, 2026)

On August 13, 1943, the world welcomed a true original. Born at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, Devera Elaine Zainal arrived with enough personality to light up a city block—and she never once dimmed that light. Known affectionately and accurately as Bollywood Granny, Devera grew up in Baltimore before settling in Lanham, Maryland, where she raised her two beloved sons, Hasan and Hakim, with equal parts love, discipline, and comedic timing.

For more than fifty years, Devera ran a daycare out of her home—though don’t you dare call it “babysitting.” She’d be the first to remind you she wasn’t “sitting on anybody’s children.” What she was doing was shaping generations. Children she once cared for grew up, had children of their own, and brought them right back to the woman who had become a legend in her own neighborhood. Her wit was sharp, her standards high, and her heart enormous.

Devera lived life with elegance and a suitcase always half-packed. She adored traveling to Indonesia, where she was known as Tante Dee, and where her warmth, humor, and unmistakable style made her just as beloved abroad as she was at home. Her love for people was genuine, effortless, and abundant—she collected friends the way some people collect souvenirs.

On March 20, 2026, surrounded by family and wrapped in love, Devera went home to be with the Lord. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry Bright and Gwendolyn Coleman Melvin, her stepfather Earl Melvin and her son Hasan Zainal. She leaves behind a family who adored her: her brothers Cameron Bright and Christopher Melvin (Tracey), her sisters Wanda Ward and Michelle “Mimi” Bland, and a beautiful legacy of grandchildren—Cameron Lee, Kenneth Zainal (Shana), Kimberly Hayes, Zaimari Hyden‑Zainal, Yasmin Zacarias, Deyawni Zainal‑Zacarius, Kayle Zainal, Nicole Zainal, and Jordan Zainal. She was also the proud great‑grandmother of seven great‑grandchildren, each of whom inherited a little of her sparkle.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Calvin B. Scruggs Funeral Home at 1412 East Preston Street Baltimore, Maryland 21213. Family will gather at the funeral home at 10:45am. A Wake is to be held at 11:00am. Friends will be received for a Memorial Service honoring Devera’s life at 11:30am.
