BERTHA MARY WELDON, daughter of the late Robert James Stewart Sr. and Hester Elizabeth Johnson was born August 24th, 1936 in Blackstock, South Carolina. With her family by her side, Bertha peacefully passed away after a prolonged illness, returning to the loving embrace of God on Saturday, March 1st, 2025.
At an early age, Bertha, affectionately known to family and friends as "Sister" or "Sis" moved to Baltimore, Maryland with her parents and older brother Robert Jr. She was educated in the Baltimore Public School System and graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. She later met and married the late Edward S. Weldon in Baltimore in June 1955. From this blessed union, two daughters were born; Joan and Kim.
Bertha worked at Sinai Hospital for a short period of time. Later, she was employed at Church Home and Hospital where she was a Nurse's Assistant. She was very dedicated to her job and often received letters of appreciation from the people she cared for. Bertha retired from Church Home and Hospital after 34 years of service. There, she forged close relationships with co-workers Beatrice Saunders and Valerie Holcomb. They remained devoted friends until their deaths. She also had special relationships with first cousins, Shirley Green and Eunice Moore, who preceded her in death.
Bertha loved gardening, going to beaches, amusement parks and vacationing with her girls. She enjoyed cooking holiday meals. Her first attempts at cooking holiday meals were after her mother passed, and they were rather bland, but she soon became an excellent cook.
Bertha joined New Friendship Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Joseph Culp and faithfully attended with her brother Robert and cousin Eunice until her illness prevented her from attending services.
Bertha leaves to cherish her memories: two daughters, Joan and Kim (Kevin): one granddaughter; Dawn (Anthony): a puppy Luna; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
