Bernard Shelton Haynes Sr. was called home to be with the Lord on June 22, 2024, at the age of 67. At the time of his passing, he resided in Howard County, though his heart remained in East Baltimore. Affectionately known as Bernie, Bernard Shelton Haynes Sr. was born on January 24, 1957, to Loretta Douglas and Charles Haynes, in Baltimore, MD.
He joined and accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior at Israel Baptist Church. Born and raised in East Baltimore, Bernard received his education from the Baltimore City Public School. From a young age, Bernard aspired to be an entrepreneur, “his own boss”.
While he held a variety of jobs, he was best known for his entrepreneurial spirit. He started multiple businesses ranging from selling toys to fruit to operating a moving and hauling company, Bernard and Sons. In his later years, he ventured into the car business, establishing his own transportation company and selling used cars. He was a man who people would call a “hustler, a boss”. Everyone knew if Bernard had a plan, he was going to find a way to make it come true! Bernard was a man of great character, known for his kindness, dependability, and generosity. He would look out for everyone he could, even if it meant giving his last dime to help someone in need. He cherished spending time with his sibling and was known for his playful nature, often teasing family members.
Anthony, also known as “Pop” recalled stories of their childhood on Dallas Street, including stories of their Uncle Willis chasing Bernard with “hot ice”. Bernard enjoyed watching his favorite football team, the Ravens, but loved a good ole Western movie. He had a passion for traveling and seeing new places. Bernard was devoted to his family and friends.
To cherish his memory he leaves his sons, Bernard “Bernie Jr” Haynes Jr and Charles “Chuckie” Haynes, daughters-in-law Felicia and Shanell; grandchildren Devin and Maya; brothers Anthony, Charles, Andre; sister-in-law Pabitra and Theresa; his cousin Wayne; godmother Mrs. Jones; special friend Sheila; host of nieces and nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family and close friends. Preceded in death by his parents, Loretta Douglas and Charles Haynes, his brothers Eugene and Ellis, and his sister Elaine.
