KYOSHI” Arnold Cornell Mitchell was born on June 26, 1949, in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the middle child of Edward Mitchell and Pearl Mitchell Evans. Arnold departed this life peacefully on Monday, February 3, 2025, after a lengthy illness.
Affectionately known as “Arnie”, he grew up in East Baltimore and graduated in 1967 from Dunbar High School. He went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree from Coppin State College and pursued a career in education, teaching in the Baltimore City Public School system for many years.
His love for teaching was a natural progression for his true passion, teaching karate! He started his Karate journey in 1965 and joined a Karate group called “The Avengers” in late 1965. He mastered the art of karate throughout his life with much success. He even visited Japan on several occasions for additional training. He studied with world renowned Sensei’s while visiting Okinawa and fell in love with the culture of the Japanese. His legacy began when he opened the first Arnold Mitchell’s Karate School. He owned and operated multiple studios across Baltimore, Maryland. His respected expertise earned him much recognition and various accolades. He was a decorated eighth degree black belt. He orchestrated many summer youth programs and participated in a multitude of events including, Afram, Artscape, Camp Concern and several after school and church organizations. He took pride in his ability to connect with children of all ages.
Now, we all know Arnold’s other passion was for fashion! Arnie has always been recognized for his keen fashion style, most often being the best dressed in the room! He participated in numerous fashion shows during his life and loved looking fly!
Arnold leaves precious memories to cherish by children, Jodie McCrea Howard (Rodney), Arnold Mitchell, Jr., Tangier Mitchell, and Isstar Mitchell (Rebecca); grandchildren, Bria, Iyana, Madison, Montana, Malik, Justice, Kaya, Lyric, Micah, Noah and Omari; brothers, Stanley Mitchell (Loretta) and Edward Mitchell, Jr.; a dear friend who became family, Joe Miller and a host of family and friends.
