Adolphus Augins, son of the late Clarice Augins Brown and the late Adolphus Arvin, stepson of the late Francis Augustus Brown who raised Adolphus as his very own, was born November 29, 1950. On Wednesday, February 23, 2022, after a valiant battle with cancer, God in his infinite wisdom called our beloved home to suffer no more. God supported Adolphus in his struggle and ultimately gave him rest and peace.
Spiritual education for “Eggie” as he was affectionately called, came at an early age. While residing in Towson, Maryland, he attended Mt. Calvary A.M.E. Church. When the family relocated to Baltimore City, along with the family, Eggie became a member of St. Matthews New Life United Methodist Church located on East 23rd Street.
As a young child, Eggie always loved watching television. Rather than play outside with his brothers and sisters, with his glasses perched on his nose, he preferred to sit in front of the TV to watch his favorite westerns and cartoons. Later in life, Eggie enjoyed sitting in front of theTV watching the Ravens. He also loved bowling and going to the movies with his great nephew to see a horror film. Taking his daughter and nieces to various restaurants for lunch was another of his past times that he enjoyed.
Eggie received his education in the Public Schools of Baltimore City, attending Margaret Brent Elementary School #53, Roland Park Junior High School and Baltimore City College. He graduated from City in June of 1968 and went on to attend the Community College of Baltimore (CCB). He graduated from CCB in 1970. After graduating from the Community College of Baltimore, Eggie enlisted in the United States Army. After serving in the military, Eggie attained employment with the City of Baltimore as a Housing Inspector in the Department of Housing and Community Development. During his tenure with the City, he also worked for the Department of Recreation and Parks as a Camp Supervisor at the Coldstream Recreation Center. At Coldstream, he was known as “Shaft” because of his faded beard and his cool demeanor. Mike Hitchens, who frequented the center as a teen informed us that Shaft always took the time to talk to him and his hoodlum crew. Mike said that he appreciated Shaft for those talks and looked to him as a role model. After a number of years working for the City of Baltimore, Eggie retired due to a disability.
On June 9, 1975, Eggie married his high school sweetheart, Anita McClinton. From this union, a beautiful daughter, Deneen Clarice Augins was born. Eggie and Anita later divorced but always remained friends.
Eggie’s love for his friends and family was evident. He had a huge heart and would give you whatever you needed.
Approximately two weeks prior to Eggie’s transitioning, he told his brother Michael that He wanted to see a Pastor so that he could be baptized and reunited with Christ. Rev. Dr. Kevin A. Slayton Sr. was with Eggie as he confessed “For it is by believing in my heart that I am made right with God. And it is by confessing with my mouth that I am saved”. Rev. Dr. Slayton baptized Eggie by placing his hand on his forehead and praying with him. Eggie is now “Absent from the body and present with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8).
Eggie leaves to cherish a lifetime of memories: his loving daughter, Deneen Clarice Greene; son-in-law, Timothy Greene; granddaughter, Diamond Greene and grandson, Timothy Greene the 2nd.; great granddaughter, Harley Greene; sisters, Dorothy Green, Marguerite Dingle and Carolyn Street (Henry Marvin); brothers, Michael Augins (Andrenette), Terry Arvin (Nisha) and Marlon Arvin; aunts, Marguerite (Sity) Gray and Romaine (Dolly) Jones; bonus daughter, Lakisha Cruz; her children, Ashlee Alem, and Brandon Neverdon; her grandchildren, Gabreil Alem Jr., and Brandon Neverdon Jr.; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Eggie was preceded in death by his mother, Clarice Augins Brown; father, Adolphus Arvin; brothers, Cornell Hill and Glenden “Denny” Augins; sister, Frances Jacqueline Brown (Kelly).
