Listen to Obituary

LAWRENCE JAMES MAYO, son of the late Lou Ethel Mayo, was born on September 13, 1941 in Baltimore, Maryland. After a life well lived, he departed this life on Tuesday, August 6, 2019.

Larry, as he was affectionately known, was a life-long resident of East Baltimore and received his education in Baltimore City Public Schools. He was a proud and supportive graduate of the Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, where he started in and learned to love football. In 1960, at the young age of  19, he was drafted into the United States Army; he served three years and received an Honorable Discharge in March 1963. Larry was skilled with his hands and applied those skills at several local manufacturers, including the Continental Can Company.

Larry was a sports fanatic, who enjoyed watching all sports, especially football, baseball, golf and tennis. As a young man, Larry played semi-professional football for the Baltimore Poets, where his teammates sarcastically called him "Flash" for his lack of speed. He also played recreational baseball and softball in Clifton Park. Larry closely followed the sports programs for Dunbar High School and the sports teams of his son and grandsons, most notably The Gilman School and St. Frances Academy.

Larry was a humorous man who loved to laugh and see others laughing. He was quick witted and wouldn't hesitate to crack a joke at your expense. Despite his gruff exterior, Larry was a kind-spirited and generous man who would often surprise you with a kind gesture, like his "world famous" shrimp salad. Larry leaves to mourn three daughters, Vanessa Terry (Donald), Madonna Huggins, and Sharon Smith (Bernard); one son, Orlando J. Mayo; eight grandchildren, Donald Terry, Jr., Shemika Terry, Orlando J. Mayo, Jr., Mikal J. Mayo, Vaughn Tucker, Alonzo James T. Mayo, Jordan Terry, Sydney and Jordyn Smith; two great-grandchildren, Noah and Jaxon; two sisters, Ursula Harris (Steven) and Betty Clark; one brother Michael Clark; one sister-in-law, Lillian Mayo, one aunt, Elaine Pearson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors. Larry was pre-deceased by three brothers and one sister; Francis Mayo, Donald Mayo, Charles Clark and Caroline Clark.
