DELVIA ANITA MYERS, daughter of the late Vera and James Myers, was born November 12, 1933. After a brief and sudden illness, she peacefully went from labor to reward on April 13, 2016.
Delvia grew up in East Baltimore on Abbott Street. She was always an outgoing person who loved people. She attended Dunbar Elementary School. It was there at the age of 10, she met her lifelong friend Bernadine Webb; a relationship that continued throughout the years, until Delvia's death. She continued her education at Dunbar Senior High where she played on the girl's basketball team and was a member of the majorette team.
As Delvia continued her journey through life, she had several jobs. She worked as a Ward Clerk at Church Home and Hospital. Her greatest joy always involved children; she loved them and they adored her. That love for children landed her a job with Model Cities, Inc. which ultimately led her to employment with the Eubie Blake Cultural Arts Center. Delvia worked tirelessly with various activities, including Afram Cultual Festival and the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre. She had many work assignments that took her to Dunbar High School where she became attached to the Varsity Basketball Program. Her love for our youth gravitated wholeheartedly. There was one young man she grew especially fond of and it is Kurk Lee. Kurk lovingly became her third son. Delvia followed his life, basketball and personal careers as any mother would. Even during her time of illness he stayed on her mind and in her heart. Everybody love 'Miss Delvia.'
Being nurtured by a strong Christian mother, Delvia joined Faith Baptist Church at an early age. She accepted Christ as her Savior and began her walk of faith by her active participation in the Baptist Young People Union (BYPU) and the Junior Missionary Society. As she continued to grow in grace she worked with Lenora Graves in the Family Life Committee, and was also very active in the Sunday School Convention. She joined the Young Peoples Choir that was later renamed as the Simon Williamson Memorial Choir. In her later years she joined the Usher Board and also served as the leader of the Junior Ushers. Even in her failing health she was a devoted and committed worker with the Christ and Knowledge Camp. Along with Marguerite Blue, they took pride in keeping accurate records for the camp.
Family was everything to Delvia. We all looked forward to Sunday dinners at her house. She was proud of her sisters and always spoke highly of them. If you knew Delvia, you knew that nothing was more important to her than her children and grandchildren. Gary and Rodney were blessed to have such a loving and devoted mother. Even in her illness, her children came first.
Delvia leaves to cherish her memories, two sons, Gary L. Myers and Rodney L. Myers, Sr.; a devoted daughter-in-law, Tara J. Myers; four grandchildren, Zakirah, Ra'shelle, Rodney, Jr. and Tamara; one great granddaughter, Jayla Nycole; four loving sisters, Phoebe Webster, Delores Mack, Ardena Johnson and Eula Spratley; three nieces, Angela, Janet and Starlette; four nephews, Michael, Titus, Jr,.Marshall and Tim; one godson, Rodney Rodgers and a host of relatives and friends.
