Martha was born July 29, 1936 in Semora, North Carolina to the late Dewitt and Bertha Henderson. She was the second youngest out of twenty-one children. She departed this life on August 11, 2018 after a lengthy illness.
She attended school in Caswell County. In 1963 she moved to Baltimore City, where several of her siblings resigned at. On December 18, 1963 she married the love of her life William “Topcat” Lawson. Martha worked at Towson State University for over 15 years in Environmental Services where she later retired.
Sugarbae as she was affectionally known as loved sitting on the front steps with the ladies talking, laughing and speaking to everyone who passed them. Hey Ma as everyone would say. If you knew her you loved her. Nothing brought more joy to her life then spending time with her great-grandchildren, whom was the core of her heart.
Siblings who preceded her in death: Moses, Glenn, Alfred, Frank, Bertha, Lottie, Dorothy, J.C., John Henry, George, Willie James, Elizabeth, Clara, Elsie, Mable and Mary. She leaves to mourn: two daughters, Denise Perkins and Cynthia Henderson; three granddaughters, Ranise, Tynise and Latoya; four great-grandchildren, Day’onna, Tyion, Heaven and Daylin; two sisters, Pansy Stewart and Norma Short; one brother Floyd, of North Carolina; two sister-in-laws, Katie Mae Henderson and Nola Mae Lawson; four special nieces, Clarissa, Janice, Brenda and Blondie; a dear neighbor, Mary Jane and a host of family and friends.
