James Henry Hurt Sr., affectionately referred to as Hurt, Jim or Dad, was born on September 28th, 1932 to the late Kenneth and Katherine Dews Hurt in Red House, Virginia. After a lengthy battle with cancer, he departed this life on February 13th, 2018. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by three siblings- Walter, Norman and Rosa Lee Hurt, as well as two sons Kenneth and Steven.
James joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church(VA) at an early age and received his education in the VA public school system. In the mid 50’s, he joined the Army and received an Honorable Discharge. He then moved to Baltimore, Maryland and worked for many years at Bethlehem Steele. Most notably, for over 25 years he worked as a cab driver for the Yellow Cab Company.
He loved LeBron James, “The King is coming on tonight”! (in his voice) as well as gambling. He would take a bet anywhere, whether at the race track or at a local card game. He also had a great sense of humor and was loved by all that he encountered. He always looked at the bright side of life, even during his time of illness he never complained. He just simply played the hand that he was dealt.
He leaves to mourn a long time and devoted girlfriend Bonita Winchester, three sons James Jr., Duane and Charles, one daughter Lynette Washington(Cliff), three sisters Margaret Gilbert(Louis), Blanche Hancock(Morgan), and Nancy Walker(Jesse), one Aunt Nannie Dews (103yrs old) all of VA, one Sister in law Dorothula Dews Hurt of NJ. Extended family includes Dorcus Richardson, John Winchester, Howard, Manuella, Shelley and Vanessa all of Baltimore. Willie and Theresa Jackson, Carl and Judy Green , Frank and Claudia Allen, Reynold and Wendy all of NJ., James and Teresa Winchester of CA. and a host of nieces, nephews, grands, great grands, and great-great grandchildren, and additional relatives and friends.
