On August 27, 1960, DERRICK FITZGERALD ELLIS,affectionately known as Terry, was born to the late Edward Ireland and Dorothy Ellis. He left us to help lift his legacy on November 9, 2018.
Derrick graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in 1978. His love for people and his gift of help had directed him into the U.S. Navy, where he served for 15 years as a Medic. After his service, he worked for 25 years in the Veterans Hospital as a Nursing Technician.
He touched the lives of many people with his smile and generosity. So it seemed inevitable that he would be a caregiver not only to his family but also to his friends who worked at the hospital. He was affectionately known at work as the "Rooster" and his friends were the "Hens".
Derrick has had a full life. He was married to Carolyn Ellis (deceased), who through their union had three boys, Derrick, Dominick and Joseph who proceeded him in death. He then continued in life and married Lawon where they had a daughter, Mya.
He later married, August 28, 2017, his childhood sweetheart, Angela. Their lives had gone in different directions only to bring them back together for his final chapter on earth. She served as his companion and caregiver.
Along with his children, Derrick, Dominick, Raimann, Quentin and Mya, he leaves to mourn his passing and hold onto his memories; his wife Angela; stepsons, Michael, James and Myles; eleven grandkids; one brother, Mark Carter; his other brother Leroy Smith preceded him in death; he had four sisters who preceded him in death; Delores Taylor, Kathleen Fairley, Denise Ellis and Yvonne Stokes; brother-in-laws, Kevin, Vernon, Bernard and Melvin; two god-daughters and a host of other family members and friends.
