Corine Johnson Terry

January 22, 1921 ~ June 10, 2017 (age 96) 96 Years Old

CORINE JOHNSON HOGAN TERRY, the first child of Pegan and Fannie Smith-Johnson was born January 22, 1921 in Tillery, NC. Being the first of nineteen (19) Johnson siblings led Corine to refer to herself as "the oldest rat in the barn" and "the umbrella", everyone has to come under me." With that position, came many and varied responsibilities.

Corine was reared in a God-loving Christian home where she learned the first great lesson of "who she was and whose she was." These early teachings led her to accept Jesus Christ as her personal savior and kept her on a lifelong quest to do his will towards family, friends and the world at large. Corine was baptized and became a member of the church which her slave ancestors started on Caledonia Plantation, the Old Johnson Church nee Tillery Baptist Church. Upon moving to Baltimore, she joined Israel Baptist and served faithfully in man ministries. Her brother-in-law, the late Rev. Joseph Stewart was called to Pastor, Corine then moved her membership and service to New Lebanon Calvary Baptist Church where she remained until her death.

While the church was in its infancy, sister Terry worked tirelessly beside Pastor and Mrs. Stewart, giving her resources, energy and time to leave legacy for generations to come. In her decades of service at NLCBC she wore many hats that included: Director of Christian Education, President of the Missionaries, Sunday School Superintendent, Facilitator for Vacation Bible School, Deaconess and member of the Executive Board. In the furtherance of the Gospel, she traveled extensively with her daughter, Carlo and son-in-law, the late Rev. Eugene Glover, ministering in churches, schools, day care centers and prisons.

Corine received her early education in the school system of Halifax County, NC. It was there that she achieved early success and recognition for her quick, keen mind and athletic prowess on the basketball court. On April 20, 1940, Corine married the late Austin "Buddy" Hogan, Jr. From this union three children were born Rev. Russell Gene (deceased), Carlo Elaine and Detrica Cheryle. Corine and Buddy provided a "way-station" for her younger sisters as they left NC to start their lives "up North."

Many considered her "a friend in time of need;"  for whatever she shared, it was done with an open heart and with no thought of repayment. She was a surrogate parent to her godchildren, Cynthia Williams and Earl Divers.

In 1965 she married the late Edward Terry, bringing under her umbrella four step children; Wayne, Rochelle, Pamela and Margaretta Scott.
